Why I’m picky about music

Who are you listening to and why? You listen to who?!?!

Besides the obvious fact being that I listen to Christian music because I want to fill my heart and my life with the things of God instead of the crap in this world, there are many reasons I am picky when it comes to music.

I know that I’m a strong critic. And I know that I am crazy opinionated. But I was born with a strong opinion. (Have ya met my parents??? they have strong ones to LOL)

Now there are many many many types of music I love. I am a hardcore rock and roll girl. I love metal. I adore an acoustic set. I get all into country. I’ll bop my head to pop. BUT, there are things that I look for when it comes to the music that tickles my ears.

First and formost, I search out for Christian music. I don’t want to fill my ears and heart with things I shouldn’t be and don’t need to be listening to. The Bible is very clear that music was created for one specific purpose. And that was to honor, worship, and glorify HIM and HIM alone.

Ephesians 5:19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.

But it doesn’t end there

Psalms 105:1-5 Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds. Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who worship the Lord. Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him. Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given,

And it could go on and on and on.

A major thing we need to focus on when it comes to music is the message of the song and the artist. One of the things that we see when we search worship or praise is that we are to sing JOYFUL songs to the Lord. About who He is, and what He has done, and so forth. It’s not about woe is YOU. It is about HIM. I am absoultely disgusted with pity party worship that is the trend today. Where worship sounds like a really poorly written country western song full of sadness, sorrow, and drama. He turns your sorrow to joy. We are to REMEMBER His wonders, deeds, and miracles. But so much of what is out there is focused on the crappy now. Well focus on the One who can fix the now. Worship the One who has fixed it before. And watch the One fix it and change it again. Don’t get me wrong, we all have bad days. But why would I want to live in that moment? Change my atmosphere. Turn my eyes to the One who can turn my sorrow to joy. Trust in His timing and His plans. Watch His promises come to pass. Do your research. Look into the lyrics, meaning, and doctrine of what you are listening to. Because music is powerful. It can change not just how you feel, but what you believe and your doctrine.

Now let’s tackle a big one. LIFESTYLE. I don’t want to listen to listen to songs by people who beat their wives. Or think drinking is ok. I don’t want to listen to music written by someone who has walked out on their spouce and family. Why? Because I don’t want that in me. I don’t ever want a seed planted in me to grow. The Bible is very clear Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. So that means what we FEED will GROW. And what we STARVE will DIE. I don’t want to feed my spiritual life from someone whose spiritual life is like garbage. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all sin. WE ARE HUMAN. But there is a difference between a mistake and a lifestyle. Again do your research. Who are you listening to? Why? What are they like? What are their families and relationships like? Do they beleive in drinking? Do they smoke or do drugs? What marriage are they on? Stay away from people like that. It doesn’t matter how many Grammy or Dove awards they have if they don’t live right. There are many people that I have grown up loving in the music industry but when their lifestyle changed, I deleted everything I owned from that artist or group.

The Bible says that we are to seek the Lord with all of our heart, soul and mind. Everyday is a new day for a new start with God. His mercies are new every morning. Spend your time thinking of things that are lovely, excellent and worthy of your time. Find music and artists that will lift you up and build you up. Find songs that encourage you in the things of the Lord and His faithful promises. I want to worship. I want to remember who He is and what He has done. I want to hear great testimonies. I want to be encouraged and lifted up by the words and songs of others.

I’m not going to give you a long big list of who to listen to or who not to listen to. I just want to encouage you. Search for yourself. Be responsible and accountable for what you are listening to. You should be picky about who you listen to. You should care about who your influences are.
